One day a man walked into a Barbershop and requested a haircut, when the Barber looked at his hair he noticed something different. He told the man that his hair has a great texture, decent length, and phenomenal potential. When he made a suggestion to the man, he instantly was puzzled. The surprised look on the man's face made the Barber intrigued and so he made the man an offer... If he could change this man's look, he may just change this man's life. The man accepted the challenge and they began the process. Three hours later, the Barber spun the chair around with the man sitting in it to face the mirror and instantly the man was stunned! His jaw completely dropped as he saw his own reflection. He realized that the deal he made with the Barber indeed was going to change his life because this was not just a Barber, this was a Loctician Magician.
The Loctician Muse is a fascinating person to be in the presence of because not only will they make you think twice about your hairstyle, but also the lifestyle that comes with having dreadlocks. Real Life Challenges of a Loctician Muse....
Body aches and Pains: After many years of being a Loctician Muse, you may notice strange aches and pains that develop within the body due to hunching in awkward positions, twisting your fingers in repetitive motions, being on your feet for several hours, and even extending parts of yourself longer than you naturally feel comfortable doing. Although the process to progress in the transformation is truly satisfying, the long-term effects may not be healthy. As a Loctician Muse, I recommend to consistently stretch your body everyday especially your hands, legs, and back area to maintain mobility in the future and avoid consistent damage to those body parts.
Long days, Short nights: There may be days that some clients come early, others show up late, you have to start repairing your hair before sunrise and may not be finished until after sunset. Caring, maintaining , and connecting to the lifestyle of dreadlocks is an ongoing way of living that doesn't end the moment of your first installment. In fact, many people have learned that they've had to adjust quiet a few things in their routine just to accommodate their hairstyle in the first few years. I suggest for people to be ready for commitment to this transition in the first stages because it does become easier to maintain in the long run.
Repetition, Repetition, Repetition: In my early years as the Loctician Muse, I was excited to try all types og locking methods, new products, and styling techniques to make my client's feel ecstatic about their new dreadlock journey, however after many years of learning, I realized that the strongest yet most boring method I needed was repetition. Repeating the same coil twists, repeating the same crocheting, repeating the same repair/ damage control, repeating the same schedule, and even repeating the same mistakes until I finally became better at my craft.
Unsavory Clients: Dreadlocks in general produce a special breed of clients with an acquired taste in order to work with them. Some people are new to dreadlocks and enjoy the trends, others are very well seasoned and don't allow anyone to touch their hair, others can be quiet timid and don't always like to voice their needs, while some clients are so vocal they let you know from the very beginning how they feel about their crown. Regardless of the person wearing the hairstyle, you have to be prepared to meet many people from a variety of walks in life and prepare for the things to come when you receive them as a client, or simply greet them on the streets.
Fluctuating Hours: As mentioned previously about long days and short nights, as well as meeting a wide variety of clients, the Loctician Muse understands that not every client's head will ever be exactly the same so you must be prepared for the different hours of work to come. Some clients have clean, short, baby locs that the pay special attention to daily so it could take a couple of hours. While other clients may have long, unruly dreadlock naps that take hours to separate and detangle from the many years of missing maintenance. Either way, you may need to prepare for the unexpected and expect to possibly be unprepared.

Some people prefer to be in the warm sun absorbing the rays on their strong dreadlocks, and you may prepare to stay inside with the cool AC unit, but depending on your experience and the position you are in financially, you may have to accommodate. Most hair schools and even salons have not full embraced dreadlocks as a necessary service in the industry so you could need to get creative with where you learn how to do dreadlocks, seek specialists for quality products, and change your pricing depending on the services you can offer. Nothing is guaranteed!
Burnout and Service Fatigue: Since not all purchases and clients are guaranteed, it's easy to understand that you could be prone to burnout from consistent repetition from working, but also scheduling clients can bring a certain type of fatigue. I suggest there being a barrier between scheduling services and receiving payments so that you can focus on doing your job which is styling dreadlocks! If you are a client with dreadlocks then you may also experience a fatigue with finding and keeping a happy and healthy Loctician that stays consistent in their work and scheduling. For clients I would suggest reviewing Locticians' online in your local area or potentially flying them into your city for a full service and always schedule your next appointment before you officially part ways. It's best to be safe than sorry!
